CHAPTER 9

Honor

I couldn't help but grin as chaos erupted around us. The guards were coming at us, swords drawn, but I was ready for them. I had my own sword in hand and was more than capable of defending myself.

Lynx and Branok were already engaging with the guards, their swords a blur of motion.

The whole party had drawn swords and turned on us. Delightful. We had found the conspirators, and they surrounded us, meaning we could strike out in any direction.

I lunged forward, my sword meeting the first guard's blade with a loud clatter. The sound echoed through the room, but I barely heard it. My senses were focused entirely on the fight.

The guard was strong, but I was faster. I dodged his swings and countered with a quick jab, nicking his arm. He stumbled back, surprised by my skill.

But there were more guards coming.

I ducked the guards, desperate to get to Trym. I met Branok's gaze across the bodies; his eyes were full of challenge. It was a race to get to Trym first.

I ducked around the guard who swung at me, drove my dagger into his stomach as I passed, then tackled Trym. There was a patch of shadow in the doorway. I intended to flash him away for a private conversation.

But the two of us slammed into the flagstones, just short of the shadows.

Trym was screaming, his face contorted in pain and rage. I didn't waste any time. I straddled him, my sword at his throat.

"You seem to be missing an arm," I demanded. "Have you betrayed an oath lately... and your queen?"

"You'll never be my queen," he snarled. "We don't need a woman to rule."

"I think you do," I disagreed.

Some of Trym's friends raced toward me, their swords held high. Trym gave me a triumphant look even from his position trapped on the ground. I shifted so I could pull my dagger, and he groaned as if I were crushing him.

Just then, the shadows I'd aimed for--and missed--rippled in front of me.

Zehr strode out of the shadows. Damyn, Caldren and Jaik were with him, gripping one of his shoulders. They drew their swords smoothly as they moved toward us.

"I hope we aren't late for the party," Damyn said.

Zehr winked at me as he slipped into the shadows again, going back for the others.

Jaik took in the guards rushing toward me and immediately burst into motion.

He leapt in front of me, smoothly decapitating the first guard. A second guard darted in toward Jaik, but Caldren threw his dagger, which landed in the man's chest. He staggered back with a look of horror written across his face, only to find himself impaled on Zehr's sword. Zehr stepped out of the shadows with Talisyn and Arren.

Zehr called to me, "By the way, your maids are pissed I didn't bring them along. I'd be prepared for watered-down tea and missing novels and whatever other little punishments."

"Why wouldn't they blame you?"

Zehr managed to shrug and smile at me even as he ran another fool through.
